Definitions

As the eleventh of the month closes in on us, I think back. It’s been nine years… nine long years. But it goes back much farther than that. In 1993, it was followers of Islam that first tried to bring down the World Trade Center… but that was an isolated incident and we moved on. In 1983, 241 Americans were killed when the Marine Barracks in Beirut was blown up by followers of Islam. But again, that’s just an isolated, one-off kind of thing, so we moved on. In 1979, our embassy in Tehran fell to Islamic “students”… but that ended and the hostages were released, so we moved on.

In between all that, there were US ships bombed and hijacked, planes with US passengers hijacked or crashed, US Embassies blown up or overrun, and an entire laundry list of assaults on American property, lives, and freedoms. The list is simply too long to put here, and almost all of it was done for the greater glory of Allah. In that same time, around the world, more Muslims have died at the hands of other Muslims than any other group. Using whatever excuse necessary, those who are not following the path of the Prophet in the “correct” way are targets for other, “better” Muslims.

Thomas Jefferson knew this. He knew it, because he heard it firsthand. After talking to Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman, Tripoli's envoy to London, Jefferson reported that the extortion the young United States of America was facing…
… was founded on the Laws of the Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.
But after we went to “The Shores of Tripoli,” well, guess what? We moved on.

I’m tired of moving on. From its very creation, America has been under assault by the forces of Islam and the followers of Mohammed. It is at this point that I will throw in the usual platitudes about “not every Muslim is a terrorist.” But any more, damn near every terrorist is a Muslim. I’ve actually had people ask me if I hate Muslims, and I tell them, “No, but everyone who’s ever tried to kill me happened to be one.”

But it’s the little tidbit of info I put up there amongst the rest - the almost throwaway line up to this point - that should be our focus here. It is Muslims who have killed more other Muslims (by far) than anyone else. And so I’m just going to say it –

THERE IS NO MODERATE ISLAM. IT DOES NOT EXIST. STOP PRETENDING THAT IT DOES. ISLAM IS A POLITICAL WILL WRAPPED IN THE THIN SHELL OF A RELIGION.

Individual Muslims who are not terribly bent on killing Americans are what we call “moderate” these days. Sufis, who follow a more mystic and peaceful reading of Islam, are maybe the closest group one could get to what we’d like to wrap up with the nice tidy little label of “moderate.” But make no mistake, Islam doesn’t do “moderate,” and the ancient Sufi practices – some of which pre-date Mohammed – strictly speaking, fall outside the faith. Why? Because as any “true” Muslim will tell you, all that peace and love that the Prophet talked about when he was on the run from the locals in Mecca, was abrogated – replaced – by all the war and conquest that he brought back with him from Medina after he’d managed to build an army and figured out that “moderation” doesn’t get you an empire.

And so, there are Muslims who practice Islam correctly, following the last orders they received from Mohammed, and those who are more like Beatles fans… they like the early stuff but aren’t so hot about the direction things went towards the end there. Your guess is as good as mine as to which is which and how many of one or the other there are.

Nine years after, an Islamic community center – a Mosque by any other name – is about to be built within the area of the ash cloud from World Trade 1 & 2. The building it would replace was actually hit by a piece of the shattered landing gear of United 175. Its original name, now discarded to make it more vanilla for the infidels who don’t know any better was “The Cordoba House.” Interesting name, that. Very Spanish. Why does an Islamic community center name itself that? The fact that Cordoba, Spain was the capital of the Andalusian Caliphate at the height of Islamic expansion wouldn’t have anything to do with it, obviously. It’s an isolated thing. A one-timer. Shhhh… go back to sleep.

Islam has problems it needs to solve from the inside. These are things that no one from the outside can impose on them. But that doesn’t mean that we have to sit back and take a beating. There will be no reason for Muslims to address their own internal issues and come to grips with a modern world, if we keep letting them impose the 7th century on us. The 21st century needs to be imposed on them. People think that time marches in one direction. But we have allowed Islam to pick up the remote control and it’s mashing the rewind button… never mind the fact that if things rewind, there would be no remote control, no tall buildings, no airplanes.

Without victory, there is no peace. Islam understands this. We need to reacquaint ourselves with it, because there are very serious implications for what “peace” means to Islam. For the West, it means the absence of war. But for Islam, it means something else entirely. Remember they will kill their own, in their own lands, for crimes against whatever is convenient that week. The only chance that we infidels have is to keep pressing back on Islam until it self-corrects to something we can live in harmony with. That is victory. That is peace. Everything prior to that is a series of isolated incidents.

I made the video at top dedicated to the “deep fight” – the warriors downrange who are combating the armed enemy. Yes, there are many more folks in Afghanistan than just Marines. So sue me – this is a Marine blog. But the real victory needs to come in New York, in London, in Madrid, and yes, in Baghdad. It needs to be won by societies who see those who would overrun and subjugate them using the very freedoms and laws of those societies in ways never intended in order to destroy them from within. Not every battle is fought with a gun, and not every war is won by the strength of armies. But every fight ends. At some point, they all do. And the question that we must face is: what do we want the world to look like when the fight is done? Islam is striving for victory so that it may define peace. We must do the same.
